Important Preventative Dental Care Treatments

Preventative Dental CareModern day dentistry is centered on preventative dental care. The aim of preventative dental care is to proactively combat tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health problems. Preventative dental care involves treatment as well as patient education. Patient behavior dictates the majority of oral health yet there are some preventative dental care treatments available for every patient.

The Dental Examination

A dental exam is a form of prevention in and of itself. This assessment determines if there is tooth decay and other oral health issues. It might involve X-rays in order to get a better view of the teeth to determine if decay or other problems are present.

A Deep Teeth Cleaning

After the dental exam, the patient has his or her teeth cleaned. This cleaning along with all of the cleanings performed by the patient are essential to the prevention of tooth decay, gum disease etc. However, the cleaning performed in the dentist's office is comparably deep. It eliminates all of that built up plaque and tartar that cannot be removed at home by floss and toothpaste.

Be sure to use a fluoride toothpaste when brushing your teeth. Replace your toothbrush every couple of months so your teeth are provided with the fresh bristles they need for a thorough clean. Brushing the tongue is an important but often overlooked component of preventative dental care. The tongue is loaded with bacteria and other gunk that should be removed on a daily basis to protect the surrounding teeth, gums, throat etc.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards can be custom made to provide the perfect fit for your mouth. Mouth guards prevent TMJ and other problems caused by teeth clenching and grinding. Mouth guards can also be used when participating in sports to prevent teeth from being damaged.

Proper Nutrition

Consuming a balanced diet of healthy food goes a long way in protecting the teeth. A diverse diet with vegetables, fruits nuts and other healthy snacks provides the teeth and the rest of the body with all the necessary nutrients. It also helps to minimize the intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates.

Preventative Dental Care for Youngsters

Preventative dental care is just as important for children. Early dental examinations and cleanings prior to the build up of bacteria lays a foundation for a lifetime of rewarding dental health. Aside from teeth cleanings, kids should also have fluoride treatments to make their teeth that much more resistant to cavities.

Dental sealants are often used when the permanent molars emerge between age six and twelve. Sealants are placed along the top surface to combat decay that otherwise would be in the grooves of the back teeth. As kids grow, they might also benefit from braces to ensure their teeth grow in nice and straight. Fluoride rinse products should also be used in combination with orthodontic devices to prevent cavities from setting in around the brackets.
