Pros and Cons of Different Types of Floss and Tips for Flossing

Posted on: October 16, 2018

There a variety of types of floss and tips for flossing. Each has its benefits and disadvantages. While it is important to select a type of floss that feels comfortable and is easy to use, when it comes to dental health, the main thing is to make it a habit to floss teeth regularly.

The different types of floss have their unique pros and cons. Here are the most important things to know about each type.

Un-waxed floss: This is a thin type of floss that is made up of about 35 strands of nylon twisted together. This type of floss can be vulnerable to breakage when cleaning tight spaces. This is best for people whose teeth are not tightly packed together.

Waxed floss: This is similar to the un-waxed floss listed above, with only one main difference: It is covered with a wax coating that makes it easier for the user to slide the floss between tight spaces. This type of floss is less likely to break while being used.

Dental tape: This is usually flatter and broader than standard floss. It is best for those whose teeth are not packed tightly together.

Polytetrafluorethylene floss: This type of floss is made out of the same materials high-tech fabrics are made from. It slides easily between the spaces between teeth, regardless of how tight they are, and it does not tear or shred easily.

Super floss: This type of floss is made from a material that is similar to the yarn used by tailors. It is stiffer than standard floss and often used to clean around dental prosthetics like bridges or braces.

Choosing between flavored and unflavored floss

All the different types of floss and tips for flossing listed above can be flavored or unflavored. It often comes down to individual preference. Those who naturally find flossing to be a boring task can spice things up by using a flavored variety. Certain flavors like peppermint actually help freshen breath when people floss.

Children tend to prefer flavored floss as well. The pleasant taste makes them more likely to floss as often as recommended. Of course, there is no rule that states people have to stick with one type of dental floss.

Flavored floss is also popular with adults. The flavoring can be useful when trying to freshen breath after meals.

Who benefits from flossing?

Anyone can improve their oral health by using dental floss. Unfortunately, not everyone is mature enough or old enough to do it properly. For example, children have a tougher time flossing properly, since it is a new habit for them, and older people often have health issues like arthritis that limits their dexterity.

Fortunately, there are types of floss and tips for flossing that can make things easier. For example, a floss holder or an electric flosser can be used to make flossing easier.
