What You Should Know About Dental Veneers
If you are considering getting dental veneers, there are a few things you will need to know before jumping in. Veneers are thin wafers of porcelain or composite resin that are permanently bonded to the front of imperfect teeth. Imperfections that can be improved by veneers include chipped teeth, discolored teeth and misshapen teeth.
What you should know before getting dental veneers
To understand the full experience of dental veneers, read on to discover what you should know before making the leap.
Placing dental veneers is a cosmetic procedure
An excellent option for those who want to enhance the look of their smile permanently, dental veneers offer a realistic way to cover up things you do not like about your smile. Whether it be that one snaggle tooth or multiple teeth that could use a boost, veneers can help.
Veneers can be placed for many reasons. Some patients have crooked teeth and do not want to get braces, while others have deeply discolored teeth that distract from an otherwise straight smile. Teeth that are cracked or chipped are also common for those who go through with veneer placement. No matter the circumstance, it is likely that veneers will be able to help you achieve the smile you want.
Although veneers are purely cosmetic, they do have structural benefits. Veneers offer support to weakened, fractured teeth that might otherwise experience damage if not covered.
Veneers are fully customized
From the color and gradient of transparency to the size of veneers, every aspect of these shells will be personalized to the specifications of each patient. We want to emphasize your smile, not create a whole new look. What if you like the gap in your teeth but just want to permanently whiten the smile? We can do that. And if you want to close that gap but keep your teeth the same color? We can do that as well.
There are two different types of dental veneers
Porcelain is the most popular material used when creating dental veneers. Porcelain veneers are both durable and lifelike and can last up to 15 years with proper care. These are also the more expensive option because of their benefits.
But if you are looking for a less expensive option that yields similar results, composite resin veneers may be right for you. These veneers cost less but only last about seven years on average before needing to be replaced. An upside of composite veneers is the ease at which they can be fixed if damaged.
What the process is like
A small amount of enamel is first removed from the front of the teeth to make room for the veneers. Impressions are taken of the prepared teeth. This mold is then sent to the lab, where your custom veneers will be created based on the exact choices specified by you and your dentist. It takes about two weeks to have the permanent veneers ready.
During this waiting period, your dentist will give you temporary veneers. Finally, the permanent veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth. Just like that, you have a brand-new smile.
