Do you ever hear a clicking or popping sound when you yawn or open your mouth? If so, that’s your temporomandibular joint. Without pain, that sound is considered normal and doesn’t require treatment, but if you’re experiencing pain, jaw stiffness, trouble opening and closing your mouth, or ringing in your ears, you may need to contact your Tampa dentist.
There are several treatment options for TMJ issues, such as occlusal mouthguards or BOTOX® injections, but we’re offering a new treatment option, EmFace. This synchronized radiofrequency and facial electrical stimulation technology is helping patients with TMJ issues get the relief they deserve.
So, how is EmFace changing the game? Let’s take a look.
What Is TMJ?
You have two temporomandibular joints, one on each side of your skull. These TMJ joints connect your jaw to your skull and make it possible for you to open and close your mouth, speak, and chew your food.
When these joints cause pain and discomfort, it’s known as TMD, or Temporomandibular Disorder.
Any combination of the following can cause TMD:
- Jaw misalignment
- Cartilage or disc damage
- Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism)
- Certain medical conditions, such as fibromyalgia
- Dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay
- Jaw muscle overuse
- Stress
- Arthritis
- Trauma
How Can EmFace Help?
At North Tampa Dentistry, we’re now offering a new TMJ treatment option. EmFace can be used for non-invasive facial rejuvenation, but it’s also FDA-approved to treat TMJ disorders.
It works by gently heating your skin’s surface, stimulating your facial muscles.
EmFace treatment can lead to:
- Fewer muscle spasms
- Less pain and discomfort
- Increased blood flow
- Enhanced range of motion
- Less TMJ dysfunction
