Everyone is different when it comes to adjusting to new dentures. It can take weeks or months to get used to the feeling of new dentures, along with learning how to speak or eat with them. Your mouth needs time to adapt as your tongue, gums, and facial muscles learn how to work with your new teeth.
What to Expect During the Adjustment Period
The first few days after getting new dentures often bring soreness and some extra saliva production. Those reactions are completely normal. Your mouth simply needs time to adjust to having something new in place. After a couple of weeks, it should be easier to eat soft foods. At this point, any discomfort should also start to fade.
Some people may adjust to new dentures right away or within a few days. Others may need a bit longer. People who get partial dentures to replace a few teeth generally don’t need as much time. The key is to wear your dentures consistently, which will make the adjustment period shorter.
At North Tampa Dentistry, we work with each patient to create the best denture fit. We’ll make any adjustments needed if soreness persists or if something just feels off. Give us a call at (813) 968-5368 to schedule your denture consultation.
